Ronald Singson is Now a Free Man
Former Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson was released from a Hong Kong prison on Saturday after spending almost a year behind bars for drug possession.
Singson was convicted in February 24, 2011 and was sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Wan Chai District Court in Hong Kong after he admitted that the drugs found in his possession were intended for personal use.
However, the former lawmaker was released early from Tung Tao Correctional Institute probably due to good behavior.
Singson’s father Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson and 3-year-old daughter Samantha were among those who welcomed him outside prison.
Singson arrived in the Philippines Saturday afternoon via private plane.
Supporters and relatives of Singson welcomed him in Vigan with a thanksgiving mass and a public rally.
In earlier interviews, Ilocos Sur Governor Singson said his son has no plans to go back to politics once he returns home and will instead focus on business and helping drug victims.
Singson resigned from the House of Representatives after he was convicted and was later replaced by his younger brother Ryan, who was elected on May 28, 2011.
Singson was arrested at the Chek Lap Kok airport on July 11, 2010 after airport authorities found 6.67 grams of pure cocaine and two tablets of Valium in his possession.
