President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino Easter Sunday Message

April 24, 2011

Belo Sunblock or No Sunblock At All!

What is the best anti-aging cream?
By Victoria G. Belo, M.D.

I find it fascinating that women are willing to spend thousands of pesos on the latest anti-aging cream, the new miracle laser or radio frequency device. However, they refuse to apply sunblock, which can prevent many of the wrinkles in the first place.

What is even more ironic is that while I educate all my patients on the importance of using sunblock to prevent premature aging, I don’t apply it myself. It’s a classic case of “Do as I say, don’t do as I do.

I mentioned this to my daughter, Cristalle, in one of our bedroom meetings. When she asked why I don’t wear sunblock, I came up with a litany of reasons.

First of all, I hate using sunblock because they’re sticky and heavy. This, coupled with the humidity of Philippine weather, makes it untenable.

Second, I usually break out with pimples, whiteheads and blackheads because they clog my pores.

Third, most sunblocks are “fragrance free” which translates to an odor that is quite suffocating.
Fourth, I sometimes get rashes and itchy because I’m allergic to benzophenones, a common ingredient of most sunblocks.

Cristalle looked at me quizzically and said, “Why don’t you come up with your own sunblock?
I was stumped. Why, indeed?

It took us two years to develop my ideal sunblock and now it’s finally out in the market.
Belo Essentials SunExpert is the latest addition to our skincare whitening line.

The treacherous thing about the sun is that it’s sneaky. It feels warm and comforting and it makes people happy. This has been proven in Nordic countries like Sweden, where they have identified a depressive disorder called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), which is caused by not enough exposure to sunlight.

Sun exposure damage is cumulative. So if you were exposed to a lot of sun in your childhood and teens, thinking you were young and could take it, think again. Sun damage is like a “computer virus,” it enters your body and starts destroying some of your DNA little by little. The effects can be seen years later.

Have you noticed how Caucasians look so good in their teens and early twenties, then seem to suddenly age in their thirties?

That’s the effect of DNA damage years before.

Just imagine each time you expose yourself to the harsh sun, hundreds of protein-eating “pacmen” are born.

In the beginning, maybe not enough to mount an obvious attack. But over the years, they multiply with every sun exposure until they become a huge army of collagen- and elastin-munching monsters called “free radicals.”

Photoaging is the medical term which refers to a person’s aging prematurely secondary to sun exposure. It is characterized by fine lines, crepe-like skin, some brownish mottling and waxy skin that is rough to the touch.

Belo Essentials SunExpert has created a sunblock that has complete UVB and UVA protection using zinc dioxide, which is a physical blocker. The sunblock is also light, non-sticky and hypoallergenic.

Backed by 20 years of clinical experience by the Belo Medical Group, the product has been tested by independent (non-Belo) dermatologists who are accredited by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

The face sunblock has SPF 40 and the one for the body has SPF 60.

I believe the application of sunblock should be a daily habit and not just a “beach” thing. First of all, it is impossible to avoid the sun in the Philippines. But there are other hidden causes of UV radiation damage. For example, cooking can cause melasma. Bright lights, even the ones used for reading, are enough to harm the skin.

The old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure definitely applies to sunblock.
So remember, a sunblock a day keeps the wrinkles away.

Maundy Thursday, Good Friday are Regular holidays

As part of Filipino Catholics’ observance of Lent, Maundy Thursday (April 21) and Good Friday (April 22) are officially declared as regular holidays.

Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldos said the two-day regular holidays are by virtue of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s Proclamation No. 84, which was signed on December 2010.

Baldos reminded employers that people who work on regular holidays are entitled to 200 percent of their basic wages for the first eight hours. In excess of eight hours, the employer must give an additional 30 percent of the worker’s wage on an hourly basis.

If an employee is not working on the said days, he or she is still entitled to 100 percent of his or her regular daily rate, “provided he or she was present, or was on leave with pay on the workday immediately preceding the holiday.”

Baldos also said that if an employee works on a holiday that also falls on his or her rest day, he or she is entitled to 200 percent of the daily rate for the first eight hours and an additional 30 percent for additional hours.

Meanwhile, the Manila Rail Transit will also take a break from Maundy Thursday, April 21 to Black Saturday, April 23 and will only resume operations on Easter Sunday, April 24.

Number Coding Lifted from Holy Tuesday (April 19) to Good Friday (April 22), MMDA Advises Motorists to Avoid EDSA and Take Alternate Routes

The number coding or the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) will be lifted starting Holy Tuesday, April 19, up to Good Friday, April 22.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino said the four-day suspension of UVVRP will provide motorists an unhampered mobility while going to and from the provinces during the Lenten season.

"We're also expecting that public transport terminals will have their hands full accommodating thousands of commuters. By allowing the public to freely use their vehicles, this will help lessen the strain on them," Tolentino said.

Meanwhile, Tolentino advised the public to avoid Edsa as much as possible and instead use Mabuhay Lanes, a series of alternate routes the agency has opened last December.

The Mabuhay lanes start at both North and South entry points of EDSA. For northbound motorists going south, they may use McArthur Highway, right turn to Samson Road, C-4/Letre, R-10, A. Bonifacio, Roxas Boulevard to destination.

Motorists coming from the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) can exit at various points, most importantly at the newly constructed Mindanao Avenue access ramp.

From South to North, the Mabuhay lanes start at Coastal Road and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).

During Holy Week, motorists may use the following alternate routes:

To North of Luzon

Take C-5 Road to QMC then right to Visayas Avenue, then left to Congressional Ave., then right to Mindanao Avenue, then take Mindanao-NLEX link to destination, and vice versa;
Take C-5 to QMC then right to North Avenue, right to Mindanao Avenue, then the Mindanao-NLEX link to destination

South of Luzon

Rizal province:

from Bicutan interchange take DR A. Santos Avenue then straight ahead to C-6 to destination, and vice versa

Cavite:

from South Superhighway take South Station Exit then straight ahead and take Daang Hari to destination

Tagaytay:

from South Superhighway take Sta. Rosa Exit or Greenfield Exit

The MMDA, in coordination with various agencies, has created Task Force M.A.S.S. (Metro Alalay Semana Santa) to ensure the safe and convenient movement of motorists and commuters during the Holy Week, particularly in areas identified as convergence points of travelers such as provincial bus terminals, airports, and seaports.

The Task Force, composed of about 1,000 traffic enforcers, is headed by Assistant General Manager for Operation Emerson Carlos.

On Holy Monday, April 18, up to Holy Wednesday, April 20, MMDA traffic enforcers will be posted at transport terminals and traffic choke points , and on popular churches and pilgrimages on Maundy Thursday, April 21, and good Friday, April 22.

Tolentino said Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group (SCOG) and Parking Discipline Office (PDO) teams of the MMDA will assist traffic enforcers in managing traffic in major roads and critical areas.

With this year's Holy Week coinciding with the school summer break, Tolentino said they are expecting a higher number of vacationers, which will result to traffic congestion at exit points of Metro Manila and at land, sea, and air transport terminals.

The MMDA chief assured that the agency's traffic personnel will be on hand to assist motorists and commuters. The public can also call Metrobase Hotline 136 for periodic traffic updates and requests for assistance.

The MMDA's Facebook and Twitter account will be also be open 24/7 during the Holy Week to accept and respond to inquiries.

Aircraft Crashes in Camp John Hay, Baguio; 1 Confirmed Dead

A person was killed and 5 others were injured when a private plane, a six-seater Piper Aztec, crashed at Camp John Hay in Baguio City on Sunday.

There are conflicting reports on the number of fatalities. Local police said there are 4 fatalities but the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said there is only “the lady who was confirmed dead on the spot.”

CAAP’s corporate communications officer Floramel Joy Songsong could not yet confirm the identity of the woman.

Senior Inspector Ruben Porte, the Philippine National Police (PNP) station commander in Loakan, identified one woman passenger as Grace Alvarez. The other passengers are: Jose Miranda, Jose George, Nes Guerro and Basil Mateo and pilot-in-command retired Col. Reynaldo Garcia.

The twin-engine light aircraft, operated by Techno Air, left the Loakan Airport at around 2:48 p.m.

It was supposed to fly to Plaridel, Bulacan. Two minutes after its take-off, the air traffic controller lost signal from the aircraft.

ABS-CBN Northern Luzon correspondent Dhobie de Guzman was near the site when the incident happened.

He said the badly injured passengers were rushed to the Baguio General Hospital. The so-called pony boys working in the area were first to respond to the victims.

Many onlookers were able to witness the plane explode near the horse trail, which serves as a picnic area in the park. They saw the plane caught fire before plunging into the trees.

Donnie “Ahas” Nietes Crushes Mexican Armando Vazquez in 1 Round

Filipino champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes made a smashing debut as a junior flyweight by knocking out Mexico’s Armando Vazquez in just 1 round at the La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City on Saturday.

Nietes tagged Vazquez with a crushing right hook, knocking down the Mexican during the main event of Pinoy Pride 5, according to a Philboxing.com report.

Vasquez failed to make the count, prompting referee Bruce McTavish to award Nietes the knockout victory 2:26 into the opening round.

Before landing that knockout punch, Nietes had to survive a stunning left hand he received from Vazquez.

With the feat, Nietes improved his record at 28-1-3 scoring 16 KOs. Vasquez, on the other hand, settled at 18-6.

Meanwhile, reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight champ Nietes is poised to face the winner of the WBO interim junior flyweight title bout between Jesus Geles and Ramon Garcia Hirales for his next fight.
